Key takeaways
- Most Kraken withdrawal holds are timed security holds: up to 72 hours after a card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or PayPal purchase, and 7 days after an ACH deposit or purchase made through Plaid.
- Only an amount equal to what you just bought or deposited is held, not your whole balance, and you can keep trading while the hold runs.
- After a password change, withdrawals to new or updated addresses are held for 24 hours. Addresses you had already saved keep working.
- Kraken Support can't shorten a timed hold. The On Hold status is different: it means a manual review, and you may need to contact support.
- Kraken doesn't publish a support phone number. Calls start only from the Call us option inside its apps, so treat any number in search results as a scam.

A Kraken withdrawal is usually on hold for one of three reasons. The most common is a timed security hold after you bought or deposited with a card, PayPal, or ACH, which lasts 72 hours to 7 days. The second is a 24-hour hold on new withdrawal addresses after a password change. The third is a manual review, which shows up as the On Hold status. Timed holds end on their own; manual reviews may need Kraken Support.
This guide covers every hold Kraken documents, how to see exactly when yours ends, what each withdrawal status means, and what to do next. It’s based on Kraken’s own support documentation, checked on September 30, 2026.
Kraken withdrawal holds at a glance
| What triggered it | How long | What’s held | Can support lift it early? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Debit or credit card purchase (USD) | 72 hours | The purchase amount; extra cash purchases during the hold stay locked until it ends | No |
| Apple Pay or Google Pay purchase or deposit | 72 hours; adding a new card to your wallet can start a new one | The purchase or deposit amount | No |
| PayPal deposit | 72 hours per deposit (one Kraken page says 7 days) | The deposit amount | No |
| ACH deposit or purchase through Plaid | 7 days | An amount equal to the deposit or purchase, in cash or crypto | No |
| Password change or reset | 24 hours | Withdrawals to new or updated addresses only | No |
| Cash received from another person in the Krak app | 72 hours | The amount received | No |
| Stock or ETF sale | Until the trade settles, one business day later (T+1) | The sale proceeds | No |
| On Hold status on a deposit or withdrawal | Until Kraken reviews it | That one transaction | Sometimes, after review |
For purchase and deposit holds, Kraken holds an amount equal to the purchase or deposit, not your whole balance, and trading isn’t blocked: you can buy, sell, and swap the held funds while you wait. Card holds can apply to every USD card purchase, not only your first one. Kraken also says whether a hold applies depends on your account history and activity, and that deposits from some banks can trigger a hold too.
Why is my Kraken withdrawal on hold?
A withdrawal hold is a temporary limit on moving a set amount out of your account. Kraken says its holds exist to protect your assets and prevent fraud. The reasoning is simple: card payments and bank transfers can be reversed for days after they’re made, but a crypto withdrawal can’t be undone. Holding the newly added amount gives the payment time to clear, so someone using a stolen card or bank login can’t buy crypto and send it away immediately.
Timed holds after card, PayPal, or ACH funding
This is the most common cause. While a hold is active, Kraken still shows your full balance but subtracts the held portion from what you can withdraw. That’s why you may get a “Balance is insufficient for a withdrawal” error, or see funds marked Withheld, even though your balance looks big enough.
A few details catch people out:
- Every USD card purchase can carry its own 72-hour hold, not just the first one.
- More cash purchases during an active card hold are locked until that 72-hour window ends.
- Adding a new card to Apple Pay or Google Pay can start a fresh 72-hour hold, even if you’ve used a different card before.
- ACH through Plaid has the longest hold: 7 days on an amount equal to what you bought or deposited.
The 24-hour hold after a password change
If you change or reset your password, Kraken holds withdrawals to new withdrawal addresses, and to addresses you update, for 24 hours. Addresses you’d saved before the change keep working. It’s a safeguard in case someone else changed your password to take over the account.
On Hold: a manual review
On Hold is a status on one specific deposit or withdrawal. It means Kraken’s team needs to check that transaction by hand. Some are released automatically after a while; others need Kraken Support. Kraken lists these common reasons:
| Reason | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Above funding limit | You moved more than your verification level allows in 24 hours or 30 days | Wait for the limit to reset, or apply for a higher verification level |
| Name mismatch | The name on your bank account doesn’t match your Kraken account | Expect the transfer to be returned or cancelled |
| Irregular activity | Your bank asked Kraken to hold the transfer | Wait for instructions from Kraken Support |
| Password change | A withdrawal to a new address within 24 hours of a password change | Wait for the 24 hours to pass |
If an On Hold deposit ends up being sent back to your bank, Kraken also holds an equal amount of your other balances until the deposit shows Returned.
Other things that block crypto withdrawals
These aren’t holds, but they cause the same kind of error:
- Open orders. Crypto tied up in an open or pending order can’t be withdrawn. Cancel the order first.
- Open margin positions. Collateral for open spot positions on margin stays locked until you close them.
- A negative balance in any currency blocks withdrawals until you cover it.
- Holding a different asset. Kraken may show your total account value in one currency, but you withdraw each asset separately. To send bitcoin, you need bitcoin in the account.
If Kraken has restricted your whole account, for example after a chargeback or a security review, the fix is different. See Kraken account restricted.
How to check if your Kraken account has a withdrawal hold
- Open the withdrawal screen. Sign in to Kraken and start a withdrawal for the asset you want to move.
- Click the tooltip icon in the withdrawal flow. Kraken shows a breakdown of your available balance, your funding limits, and any active holds.
- Or ask the Support Center assistant. While signed in, open the chat at support.kraken.com (opens in a new tab) and type “I can’t withdraw”. It lists any holds on your account.
- Work out when your hold ends. Find the purchase or deposit that triggered it and add 72 hours or 7 days. That amount becomes withdrawable then; the rest of your balance can be withdrawn now.
A worked example. You hold $1,000 of USDC on Kraken. On Monday at 10:00 a.m. you buy $200 of bitcoin with a debit card. Kraken may hold $200 until about Thursday at 10:00 a.m. Until then you can withdraw up to $800 worth of assets, and you can trade the bitcoin freely. If you make another card purchase on Tuesday, that amount also stays locked until Thursday morning. With ACH through Plaid, a $500 deposit made on the 1st would free up on the 8th.
What each Kraken withdrawal status means
Your withdrawal’s status tells you where it is. In Kraken Pro, open Portfolio, find the transfer under Funding transactions, and click it for details, including the blockchain transaction ID for crypto.
Crypto withdrawals
| Status | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Initiated | Kraken is running internal checks (up to about 10 minutes) | Nothing yet; you can still cancel |
| Pending | Checks are done and the transaction went to Kraken’s payment gateway (up to about 10 minutes) | Nothing yet; a cancel request may not work |
| Sending | Broadcast to the blockchain, waiting for a confirmation | Look up the transaction ID on a block explorer |
| Success | One confirmation on the network | If it hasn’t arrived, the receiving platform may need more confirmations |
| On hold | Held for a manual check | Contact Kraken Support |
| Failed | The withdrawal failed | Open the withdrawal and read the “Error” field |
Kraken documents these labels for its classic interface, so the wording can differ slightly in Kraken Pro and the apps. How long a crypto withdrawal takes overall depends on Kraken’s steps above plus the number of confirmations the receiving wallet or exchange requires.
Cash (USD) withdrawals
| Status | What it means | Contact support if… |
|---|---|---|
| Pending | Being processed in Kraken’s systems | It stays here unusually long |
| Sending | Processed by Kraken | It’s still here after 1 business day |
| Confirming | Received by Kraken’s banking partner | It’s still here after 1 business day |
| Success | Sent to Kraken’s banking partner | The money hasn’t reached your bank within 5 business days |
| On hold | Held for a manual check | Now |
| Failure | The withdrawal failed | Now |
How fast USD arrives depends on the method you choose:
| USD method | Minimum | Fee | Typical time |
|---|---|---|---|
| ACH | $1 | Free | 0–2 business days (2 p.m. ET cutoff) |
| Fedwire | $20 | $4 | 0–1 business day |
| RTP (instant) | $20 | 1.5%, capped at $50 | Near-instant, if your bank supports RTP |
Kraken can’t pay out withdrawals as cash or checks, or to a debit card, credit card, or third-party payment processor, and bank holidays add time.
What to do if your Kraken withdrawal is on hold or pending
- Check Kraken’s status page. Visit status.kraken.com (opens in a new tab) for funding delays or network maintenance on the asset you’re moving.
- Look for a timed hold. Use the withdrawal tooltip, or ask the Support Center chat “I can’t withdraw”. If it’s a timed hold, the only fix is to wait until it ends.
- Rule out the other blocks. Cancel open orders that use the asset, close margin positions, cover any negative balance, and make sure you hold the exact asset you want to send.
- Check the withdrawal’s status under Funding transactions and compare it with the tables above.
- For crypto, look up the transaction ID on a block explorer. If it’s confirmed, the funds have left Kraken, and the receiving platform is the one to ask.
- For cash, check your bank details and bank holidays. Don’t contact Kraken’s banking partners directly; Kraken says that adds delays.
- Contact Kraken Support through official channels only if the status is On Hold or has lasted longer than Kraken’s stated times. Sign in at support.kraken.com (opens in a new tab) and use the chat or a guided support request (opens in a new tab).
Can Kraken Support release a withdrawal hold early?
Not a timed one. Kraken’s help center says plainly: “Kraken Support is unable to bypass a time-based withdrawal hold.” Contacting support won’t speed it up, and neither will anyone who offers to “unlock” it for a fee.
Support can help when a specific deposit or withdrawal is in On Hold status, because someone at Kraken has to review it. If withdrawals are suspended because of a chargeback, Kraken keeps them suspended until the outstanding balance is repaid.
How to avoid Kraken withdrawal holds next time
- Fund ahead of time. If you need to move money by a certain date, make card purchases at least 3 days before, and allow up to 7 days for ACH and PayPal.
- Know which methods trigger holds. Kraken’s hold articles name cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, and ACH through Plaid. Bank wires aren’t on those lists, although Kraken notes that deposits from some banks can still trigger a hold.
- Save withdrawal addresses before you change your password, or leave 24 hours between a password change and a withdrawal to a new address.
- Keep your details consistent. The name on your bank account should match your Kraken account, and very large deposits may need a higher verification level first.
- Send a small test amount the first time you use a new withdrawal address.
Beware of fake “Kraken support” numbers
Kraken says that on a call, a real support specialist will never ask for your password, a 2FA or device approval code, your seed words or Master Key, remote access to your computer, or changes to your security settings. Kraken says its emails come from @kraken.com addresses, including subdomains such as @email.kraken.com, although some Krak app emails come from @email.krak.app. The FTC warns that scammers pay to place fake customer-service numbers in search results, then ask for money, personal details, or remote access to your computer. If you’ve been targeted, see where to report a scam.

Frequently asked questions
How long does Kraken hold withdrawals?
Usually 72 hours after a debit or credit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or PayPal purchase, and 7 days after an ACH deposit or purchase made through Plaid. A password change holds withdrawals to new addresses for 24 hours. The tooltip in Kraken's withdrawal screen shows the hold that applies to you.
Can Kraken Support remove a withdrawal hold early?
No. Kraken says its support team can't bypass a time-based withdrawal hold. Support can help with deposits and withdrawals in On Hold status, which are waiting for a manual review.
Can I still trade while my Kraken withdrawal is on hold?
Yes. Kraken's purchase and deposit holds only limit withdrawals of the held amount. You can buy, sell, and trade those funds throughout the hold.
Why does Kraken say my balance is insufficient for a withdrawal?
Held funds still appear in your balance but are subtracted from what you can withdraw. Open orders, open margin positions, a negative balance in any currency, or not holding the exact asset you want to send can also block a withdrawal.
Why is my Kraken crypto withdrawal still pending?
Kraken's Initiated and Pending steps each normally take up to about 10 minutes. Sending means the transaction is on the blockchain waiting for a confirmation, which depends on network conditions. Check status.kraken.com for delays on that asset.
Is there a Kraken phone number I can call about a withdrawal hold?
No public one. Kraken offers voice support only through a Call us option in its mobile apps, in certain situations, and says any Kraken support number you find online should be treated as a phishing scam.
