Key takeaways
- Selling works like buying: choose BTC/USD or ETH/USD, select Sell, enter dollars or coins, pick an order type, review the estimated fee, and place the order.
- Each sale costs 0.75% of the trade value ($0.01 minimum). For coin sells the fee comes out of your proceeds; for dollar sells it's covered by selling a little more crypto.
- Crypto trades typically settle immediately, and the cash lands in your Schwab Crypto account.
- To spend it or send it to your bank, transfer the cash to the linked brokerage account first (Transfer & Pay, then Transfer Funds). Online transfers between the two accounts are free.
- Cash left in the crypto account earns no interest.

To cash out of Schwab Crypto, you sell the crypto, which lands as cash in your Schwab Crypto account, then you transfer that cash to your linked Schwab brokerage account. From there you can spend it, invest it, or withdraw it to your bank. Each sale costs 0.75% of its value, and moving cash between the crypto and brokerage accounts online is free.
Here are the steps, from Schwab’s own walkthrough and FAQ as of October 22, 2026.
Step 1: Sell your crypto
On Schwab.com
- Log in to Schwab.com and find your crypto position, for example BTC/USD or ETH/USD.
- Open the menu next to the position and select Sell. This opens the trade ticket.
- Use the Coins / Dollars toggle to choose how much to sell: a number of coins or a dollar amount.
- Choose the order type: Market, Limit, Stop, or Stop limit.
- Select Review Order and check the amount and the estimated fee.
- Select Place Order, then check your order status to confirm the fill.
Schwab’s walkthrough describes it this way: “To sell a portion of your holdings, you’ll follow very similar steps to buying.”
On Schwab Mobile and thinkorswim
You can also sell on the Schwab Mobile app and on thinkorswim desktop, web, and mobile, where the ticket works the same way. thinkorswim adds trailing stop, trailing stop limit, and other advanced order types. Schwab has short videos for each platform on its Trade Crypto page.
What the sale costs
Schwab charges 0.75% of the trade value, with a $0.01 minimum, on every sale. How it’s applied depends on how you enter the order:
| How you sell | How the fee is applied | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Coin sell | “Fees are deducted from the USD proceeds of the sale.” | Sell 0.01 BTC: you receive its value minus 0.75%. |
| Dollar sell | “Fees are added to the amount you enter.” | Sell $1,000: you receive $1,000, and a little extra crypto is sold to cover the $7.50 fee. |
For dollar market sells, Schwab reserves “a small amount of additional crypto” to cover price movement during the trade, so a dollar sell for your entire balance may not go through. Selling by coin quantity avoids that cushion, because the fee comes out of the proceeds instead.
The estimated fee on the review screen can differ slightly from the final fee if the price moves. See Schwab Crypto fees for more examples.
Step 2: Wait for settlement
Schwab says: “Supported crypto trades typically settle immediately. After settlement, cash proceeds from sales will appear in your Schwab Crypto account and can then be transferred to your linked brokerage account.”
Step 3: Move the cash to your brokerage account
- On Schwab.com, select Transfer & Pay, then Transfer Funds. In the Schwab Mobile app, select More, then Transfer Funds.
- Choose your Schwab Crypto account as the source and the linked brokerage account as the destination.
- Enter the amount and submit.
Schwab’s pricing guide: “Your Schwab Crypto Account is linked to a Schwab One brokerage account with no minimum balance requirement. Online transfers between the accounts are free.”
Step 4: Withdraw to your bank (optional)
Cash can’t go straight from Schwab Crypto to an outside bank, because the crypto account only connects to its linked brokerage account. Once the money is in the brokerage account, withdraw it to your bank the same way you would any other cash at Schwab.
Good to know
- Don’t leave cash sitting in the crypto account. “U.S. dollar funds and cryptocurrency held in your Schwab Crypto Account are non-interest bearing.”
- Cash in the crypto account is FDIC-insured on a pass-through basis up to $250,000, subject to conditions and shared with any other money you hold at Charles Schwab Premier Bank.
- You can sell nearly 24/7, except during a monthly maintenance window of up to two hours, usually on a Saturday evening.
- Large sales: orders over $1 million must be limit orders, and the maximum per order is $2 million.
- Tax form: Schwab sends one “only if you have at least one cryptocurrency sale in a given tax year.” For how a sale is taxed, talk to a tax professional.
Prefer to move the crypto instead of selling it?
If Schwab has enabled crypto transfers on your account, you can send bitcoin or ether to a wallet you control instead of selling, up to $5,000 per transfer and 3 transfers per day. See can you withdraw crypto from Schwab to a wallet?
