Key takeaways

  • A new Schwab Crypto account can take up to two business days to be approved, and up to two more for an automatic upgrade before it can trade.
  • Crypto lives in its own account: switch the account selector to your Schwab Crypto account to see positions and history.
  • During Schwab's monthly maintenance window (usually Saturday evening, up to two hours), positions, balances, and history may be temporarily unavailable.
  • Crypto sent in shows up after 3 confirmations for bitcoin (about 30 minutes) or 12 for ether (about 3 minutes), longer if Schwab reviews it.
  • No Transfer Crypto option usually means transfers haven't been enabled on your account yet; Schwab emails you when they are.

If your Schwab Crypto account, balance, or coins aren’t showing, the cause is usually one of five things: your account is still being reviewed or upgraded, you’re looking at your brokerage account instead of the crypto account, Schwab’s monthly maintenance window is running, a crypto deposit is still waiting for confirmations, or crypto transfers haven’t been enabled on your account yet. Each has a simple check, below.

Everything here comes from Schwab’s Schwab Crypto FAQ as of October 22, 2026.

Quick diagnosis

What you’re seeing Most likely cause What to do
Applied, but no crypto account yet Application still under review Wait up to two business days
Account opened, but you can’t trade Pending account upgrade, or no cash in the account Fund it; allow up to two business days for the upgrade
Crypto missing from your positions Brokerage account selected, not the crypto account Switch the account selector to Schwab Crypto
Positions, balances, or history blank Monthly maintenance window Wait; it lasts up to two hours
Crypto you sent in hasn’t arrived Waiting for confirmations or an internal review Check the transaction in a block explorer; wait
No Transfer Crypto option Transfers not enabled on your account yet Wait for Schwab’s email
Crypto not in paperMoney Not supported in the simulator Use your real Schwab Crypto account
Account restricted Schwab placed a restriction Contact Schwab

1. Your new account is still being reviewed or upgraded

Opening Schwab Crypto can involve two waits:

  • Review: “Most crypto accounts are opened immediately upon approval, but it can take up to two business days to review and approve an application.”
  • Upgrade: “Most clients will be able to trade immediately after they fund their newly opened Schwab Crypto account. If you are unable to trade, your account may be pending an upgrade.” Schwab says the upgrade happens automatically, “can take up to two business days and is required to trade crypto,” and that it will email you when it’s done.

If it’s been longer than that, contact Schwab through chat on Schwab.com or in the Schwab Mobile app. Schwab also says to reach out if you’re “having trouble completing the crypto account application.” See how to open a Schwab Crypto account.

2. You’re looking at the wrong account

Schwab Crypto is a separate account, linked to your brokerage account but not part of it. Your coins only show when the crypto account is selected. Schwab’s paths to your crypto activity:

  • Schwab.com: Accounts, then Transaction History, then select your crypto account from the account selector.
  • Schwab Mobile: Accounts, tap your crypto account, then tap History.
  • thinkorswim web: Positions, then Transaction History, then Crypto.
  • thinkorswim mobile: History, then Crypto.
  • thinkorswim desktop: Monitor, then Account Statement.

If you have more than one Schwab Crypto account, each linked to a different brokerage account, check the right one.

3. Schwab’s maintenance window is running

Schwab reserves a monthly maintenance window, “usually on Saturday evenings,” of up to two hours. During it:

  • “You may not be able to place new orders.”
  • “Existing orders may not execute.”
  • “Existing orders that do execute may have delayed confirmations.”
  • “Positions, balances, and history may be temporarily unavailable.”

Schwab notifies you ahead of time by email and inside Schwab.com, the Schwab Mobile app, and thinkorswim. Check back once the window ends.

4. A trade or cash transfer is still in progress

  • Open orders: a limit order stays open until it fills or you cancel it, for up to 180 days. Check your order status.
  • Partly filled orders: only the filled part changes your position.
  • Cash from your brokerage account: transfers into the crypto account during normal business hours are available immediately. Outside those hours, give it more time.
  • Sale proceeds: after a sale settles, the cash sits in your Schwab Crypto account until you move it to the linked brokerage account.

5. Crypto you sent in hasn’t arrived yet

Schwab credits deposits after a set number of blockchain confirmations: bitcoin after 3 (about 30 minutes) and ether after 12 (about 3 minutes). Schwab adds that “processing times can be longer due to internal reviews.”

Check these, in order:

  1. Did the sending platform actually send it? Look for a transaction ID or a block explorer link in that app.
  2. Did you send BTC on the Bitcoin network or ETH on the Ethereum network? Other coins and networks aren’t supported and “may be lost and unrecoverable.”
  3. Was it above the minimum, 0.00001 BTC or 0.0001 ETH, after the sender’s fee?
  4. Did you use the exact address Schwab showed under Transfer Crypto, Receive Crypto?

If all four check out and it’s been well past the confirmation time, contact Schwab with the transaction ID. See how to transfer bitcoin into Schwab Crypto.

6. Transfers aren’t enabled on your account

If Transfer Crypto doesn’t appear under Transfer & Pay, your account most likely hasn’t been enabled. Schwab says crypto transfers are “being rolled out in phases” and “Schwab will inform you via email when your account has been enabled to transfer crypto.” You’ll also need to enroll with identity verification and a passkey before you can send or receive.

7. Your account was restricted

Schwab’s FAQ: “If your Schwab Crypto account was restricted and you have questions, you can contact us via chat, email, or phone.” One known cause is moving: accounts “may be restricted or closed if you move to an unsupported jurisdiction,” which means New York, Louisiana, or a U.S. territory. See Schwab Crypto in New York and Louisiana.

Not a fix: paperMoney

If you’re looking for bitcoin or ether in Schwab’s paperMoney practice app, Schwab says “buying and selling Bitcoin and Ethereum are not available on paperMoney at this time.”

Frequently asked questions

Why isn't my Schwab Crypto account showing?

If you just applied, it may still be under review, which can take up to two business days. After approval, Schwab may also need to upgrade your account before you can trade, which can take up to two more. Schwab emails you when your account is ready.

Why can't I see my crypto in Schwab?

Your crypto is in a separate Schwab Crypto account, not your brokerage account. Select the crypto account in the account selector on Schwab.com or open it in the Schwab Mobile app. During monthly maintenance, positions and balances may be temporarily unavailable.

Why is my Schwab Crypto balance not showing correctly?

Check for a maintenance window, a trade that is still open or only partly filled, or a pending transfer. Crypto values also change around the clock with prices. If the numbers still look wrong, contact Schwab through chat.

Why didn't my crypto deposit show up in Schwab?

Schwab credits bitcoin after 3 blockchain confirmations, about 30 minutes, and ether after 12, about 3 minutes, and internal reviews can take longer. Make sure you sent BTC on the Bitcoin network or ETH on the Ethereum network, above the minimum, to the address Schwab gave you.

Why don't I see Transfer Crypto in my Schwab account?

Crypto transfers are being rolled out in phases. Schwab says it will email you when your account has been enabled. You also need an open Schwab Crypto account.

Why can't I trade crypto on paperMoney?

Schwab says buying and selling bitcoin and ether isn't available on its paperMoney simulator at this time.

My Schwab Crypto account was restricted. What do I do?

Schwab's FAQ says to contact it through chat, email, or phone if your Schwab Crypto account was restricted. Use the contact options on Schwab.com or in the Schwab Mobile app, and note that accounts may be restricted if you move to New York, Louisiana, or a U.S. territory.
